Technology
Nowadays, very often we come across with new and path breaking innovations and technologies which find their application in many fields. This not only provides solution to many complex problems but also opens the path for even newer innovations and discoveries. 3D scanning is one such latest technology which has numerous useful applications such as animation, archiving, medical research, rapid prototyping, industrial design and quality control inspection, to name just a few. This article is intended to give an understanding of 3D scanning.

3D scanning is basically a process of creating 3D data or rather 3D digital models from the physical objects or scenes from our real world. The created data can be visualized on a computer. It can also be modified, stored, exchanged with others and even printed just like any other data. The devices which capture this data is referred to as a 3D Scanner. The collected data can range dramatically in the way it is collected and the accuracy of the measurement. These scanners collect immense amounts of data and the software required to process the data is called 3D scanning software. The software is required to process the output into something usable that can be handled by some other software. The software can do many different things to the data depending on the usage. There are various applications of 3D scanning such as reverse engineering, inspection and digital archiving or 3D printing. 3D scanning software is basically a way to unlock the full potential of a 3D scanner.

The technology is very much in demand and 3D Scanners have proven their usefulness and value in many industries. A 3D scanner has its usage in many forms such as creating CAD models of real parts to capture lost designs, verifying product quality by comparing manufactured parts, making mass customized products for different usage such as, health care, dentistry and fashion, scanning building to create 3D models etc.

There are different types of 3D scanners available for different purposes. Laser scanners scan objects using triangulation. Long range scanners have good accuracy and are used for scanning large objects such as planes, buildings, rooms and bridges. Photogrammetric scanners take multiple images of the object using reference points from different angles from which images are taken creating scan data. CT scanners generate data which can be used for either reverse engineering or inspection purposes. Trackers are used to scan large objects by tracking the position of the measuring instrument on the object and keeping a note each time a measurement is taken. High Speed 3d Scanning machine is capable of scanning a target at very high speeds.

3D scanners are faster, less expensive and more accurate and have many applications which is why people are keen to buy 3d Scanners. Fortunately, they are now within the reach of many and one can buy a 3D Scanner at a very affordable price. However, a good knowledge and understanding of 3D scanning is required to choose one that goes best with the requirements.
